a fresh kitchen.

Well, we basically have a new kitchen, kids! It has been kind of a saga because, well, re-doing cabinets and counter tops is expensive. We're pretty proud of the progress we were able to make on this in less than a year's time. A quick reminder to what it looked like upon move-in. Some parts of the cabinets were rotten on the inside. I couldn't even unpack into them, so we ripped them out instead.

We took it from this:

To this:

Here is a little post about the cabinet switcheroo. As you can see, we laid to original counter tops back on top of the new cabinets. They didn't fit perfectly but they did the job for the next six months as we saved up for the counter top project. We knew we needed to hurry because since they weren't exactly attached there was a risk that water/moisture could get behind our new cabinets and start to mold. We were super careful about keeping things clean and dry.

Now here is the kitchen with our new counter tops:

I'd say the only bad thing about these is that they are so shiny that taking good pics of them is difficult! They really are white and not yellowish, I promise.

Yay! We originally thought it would be cool to do concrete counter tops but after much research realized that although they look really cool, they take quite a bit of maintenance to stay looking nice so we decided against. Low maintenance for me, please! We didn't have a big budget either so real stone was out of the question (someday I will have quartz!) The final decision? We went with white Formica Solid Surface. I didn't even know what that was before my husband filled me in, but it's basically acrylic material. It's a step above laminate but below stone. The cool thing about it is that it is still one piece so there are no seams anywhere. It is easy to clean and it can be sanded back smooth if it gets blemished with a stain or scratch.

I was nervous but am actually really happy with them. This is a kitchen I can enjoy hanging out in.

  1. Love it! The dark paint alone made the "wood" countertops not so bad and now the white counters look even better! When you guys run out of projects at your house, you're welcome to attempt some at mine :)

  2. Wow much better !!! Love house projects :)

  3. Um, sorry to admit that I had no idea you re-did the blog! It looks awe.some. And your kitchen looks amazing. LOVE the white countertops. They look so good with the dark cabinets. Man, you have been busy. What's going to happen when you start "nesting"????

    1. Haha I just barely did it and didn't make any kind of announcement so you don't need to be sorry. I kept wanting to blog here but every time I looked at the design and name I was sad, so I had to fix it before I could do any new posts! Thanks, we are pumped about the new look! I hope I will have some energy left to nest? So far the nursery has still not even begun...
